The river is covered with ice. The door was still a bit open, so our poor Ugly Duckling slipped out the door, and back into the storm. The geese were very kind to him though their honks hurt his ears. But the mother duck made them all wait, for she promised herself that she would love all her children the same. He broke the ice in pieces with his wooden shoe, and carried the duckling home to his wife. Some words and meanings were missing. In the morning, the strange visitor was discovered, and the tom cat began to purr, and the hen to cluck.
